FRANKFURT, GERMANY; Nollywood has been thrown into mourning following the death of veteran actor Francis Duru, who reportedly died in the early hours of Friday, October 23, 2026. He was 57.
Duru’s death was announced by his family in a statement posted on his official Instagram account on Friday morning. The family disclosed that the celebrated actor died following a brief illness.
“We, the family of Francis Duru, regret to announce his passing following a brief illness,” the statement read.
“We appreciate your prayers, love, and understanding. May his soul rest in perfect peace. Amen.”
His death has sparked an outpouring of grief among Nollywood colleagues, fans and admirers who have continued to pay tribute to his remarkable contributions to the Nigerian film industry.
Duru had denied illness rumours in June
The actor had, as recently as June, dismissed reports circulating on social media that he was battling a life-threatening illness.
The rumours gained widespread attention after a video showing Duru looking frail was circulated online, prompting concerns among his fans, friends and colleagues.
Reacting to the reports at the time, Duru posted a video on Instagram in which he described the footage as “fabricated and malicious.”
From Cameroon to Nollywood stardom
Born on July 27, 1969, in Cameroon, Francis Duru was the son of Nigerian parents from Imo State.
He received his primary and secondary education in Cameroon before relocating to Nigeria to pursue higher education.
He was admitted to the University of Port Harcourt, Rivers State, where he studied Theatre Arts and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1996.
Duru began his professional journey in the Nigerian film industry in 1989, making his debut in Missing Mark, directed by the late Ndubuisi Oko.
Although the film did not immediately bring him widespread recognition, Duru continued to build his career and eventually emerged as one of Nollywood’s respected actors.
His major breakthrough came in 1995 when he featured in Rattlesnake, the acclaimed action-comedy produced by the late filmmaker Amaka Igwe.
Duru delivered a memorable performance as Ahanna, a role that significantly raised his profile and established him as a prominent face in the Nigerian film industry.
Awards, honours and national recognition
Throughout his illustrious career, Francis Duru received numerous awards and honours in recognition of his contributions to Nollywood and his influence on younger generations.
He was also named a United Nations Ambassador of Peace, in recognition of his positive influence on young people.
In 2020, he won the Best Actor in a Leading Role (Igbo) award at the Best of Nollywood Awards for his performance in Mboputa.

The NEGA ceremony served as the closing event of the Nollywood Film Festival Germany (NFFG), held from September 9 to 10, 2016.
Other prominent personalities honoured at the 2016 NEGA Gala included Queen Blessing Ebigieson, who received the Nollywood Humanitarian Ambassador award; Mrs. Charity, honoured for Excellence in Humanitarian Service; and singer Kiss Daniel, who was named Artiste of the Year.

Charles Inojie anchored memorable NEGA night

Inojie himself was among the first recipients of the NEGA awards when the ceremony was held in Essen, Germany, in 2012, alongside Nollywood star Monalisa, Ghanaian actress Jackie Appiah, and other prominent African entertainment personalities.
The 2016 NEGA ceremony also featured a memorable stage performance by Francis Duru alongside Charles Inojie, a moment that would later become one of the cherished memories of the event.

A family man remembered
Francis Duru married his wife, Adokiye, in 2003, and the couple had four children.
The family suffered a devastating loss in August 2024 when they lost one of their children, Ifeanyi.
With his death, Nollywood has lost a veteran performer whose career spanned several decades and whose performances left an indelible mark on the Nigerian film industry.
Francis Duru may have taken his final bow, but his body of work, unforgettable performances and contribution to Nollywood will continue to live on.
